I love dystopian and post-apocalyptic novels. I can’t help it. I’m not sure I want to know what it says about me that I can envision myself kicking ass all over some crazy scary world. Those that know me know that, in reality, I would be one of the first to go, but that’s neither here nor there. It’s my head, I can be as awesome as I want.
One of the most well-known of these worlds, in recent years, is the one created by Suzanne Collins in the Hunger Games series. North America is now known as Panem and has been divided into districts. Some are rich, powerful, and completely decadent. Others are poor and struggling (or have been wiped off the map by the Capitol.) I’m not going to re-hash the entire series; most people have read the books or seen the movies. If you haven’t, give the first book a try. The Hunger Games is a great read. I mean, you’ll cry, but that’s the sign of a good book, right?
The Hunger Games themselves are a ploy by the Capitol to keep the Districts in line. Seems there was a revolt a few years back that threatened their cushy lives. The answer, obviously, is to pit children of the districts against each other in an epic fight to the death. Obviously. Our heroine is Katniss Everdeen. Our hero is Peeta Mellark. (Shh, Gale fans, shh…) They go through a LOT in the first book. A LOT. You did read the premise a couple sentences ago, didn’t you?
Drinking in the Capital
Our recipe for this Thirsty Thursday actually comes from the second book in the trilogy, Catching Fire. If you thought the first book put our heroes into some desperate situations, well, hang onto your hats. The second installment brings us to the Quarter Quell; a bigger, more brutal Hunger Games to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the very first Games. The night before the spectacle gets started, Katniss awakens from a nightmare. What?!? She’s having nightmares?!? Shocking, I know…but in an effort to calm herself, she orders some warm milk (has that ever actually worked?) and her attendant, feeling some pity for her, dresses it up a bit, adding “a touch of honey to the milk. For sweetness. And just a pinch of spice.”
This is my take on that milk. Everyone in the house liked it. It’s sweet and creamy and a bit like eggnog. It’s a perfect ending to a cool fall day. I hope you get to enjoy it simply because it’s a lovely warm beverage and not because you’re fighting nightmares in a dystopian future. But if that’s the case… “May the odds be ever in your favor.”
Warm Spiced Milk
- 2 cups milk any type will work
- 2 TBSP honey
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 whole nutmeg cracked
- 1 tsp vanilla
- Add all ingredients except vanilla to small saucepan.
- Bring to very gentle simmer (do not boil.) Look for small bubbles at the edge of the mixture.
- Turn off heat
- Add vanilla and allow to steep for 5 minutes.
- Remove cinnamon stick and nutmeg to serve.
- Sprinkle ground cinnamon and nutmeg on top, if desired.
