We’re two weeks away from the new year! As hard as it is to believe, it will soon be time for the countdown to 2019. I don’t know about you, but every year it’s a little harder for me and the Mr. to stay awake until midnight and a little easier for the kids. Hardly seems fair, does it?
The very idea of staying up that late gets the younger ones excited. I’m usually subjected to a constant stream of elementary math as my second grader keeps me informed on exactly how long we have until midnight. There’s extra energy in the air – for them.
While, on occasion, we’ll find a family friendly outing (like the holiday lights at the Toledo Zoo) or spend the evening with friends and family, most often we spend a relatively quiet night at home with snacks, age-appropriate sparkling drinks, and holiday programming. On these homespun New Year’s Eves I find that a list of simple activities help keep the kids engaged and entertained while waiting for the big moment.
New Year’s Countdown
Much like a Christmas Countdown, the New Year’s countdown can be simple or elaborate. I like simple. But make it your own. Give it a theme. If you love board games, play a new one every hour until midnight. Love music? New playlist every hour. Food’s your thing? Try something new to you every hour. As you can see, the possibilities are endless and will help usher in the new year with plenty of fun!
Need some inspiration? Here’s a gift for you! Cut the strips apart and make a paper chain out of them. Once an hour, remove a link and do the activity listed. Easy peasy. There’s even two versions so you can pick the style you like best. And I included some blank strips for activities you want to include. Just click on the download links at the bottom of the post and you’ll be ready to go!
Of course, if you’re planning on some very fancy and exciting New Year’s fun, tell us all about it!
