I love to read. With a book, I can visit far-off places, meet new friends, or learn anything I can dream of. I read a mix of fiction and non-fiction and consider both essential to a good life. Non-fiction books about simplicity and self-sufficiency help me along this road to a simpler life. Fiction books allow me an escape. In fiction, I can be absolutely anything. If you have trouble enjoying reading, it may be that you just haven’t found the right subject matter. If the act of reading is difficult for you, may I suggest trying an audiobook? Whether you read fiction or non-fiction, use an e-reader or prefer a physical book, listen to audiobooks every day or absolutely never; you should join me over on Goodreads. The social media site for readers is one of my favorite online places. Here are ten reasons why.
1. You can follow and interact with some of your favorite authors.
Many authors have profiles on Goodreads that you can friend or follow, depending on their privacy settings. It’s a great way to see what your favorite authors are reading and writing!
2. Your friends can recommend books that they think you’d enjoy.
Your friend finishes a book and thinks you would like it; over on Goodreads, they can send you a recommendation. I take friends’ book recommendations to heart, so this is a feature I love!
3. You can read reviews of the latest bestseller.
Now, I firmly believe that you should read any book that sounds interesting to you, regardless of reviews, but it’s also nice to know what other folks think before shelling out your hard-earned money! Now you can read reviews from real readers of any book out there!
Authors offer up signed copies, Advanced Reader Copies, Kindle editions, paperbacks… you get the idea. While lots of people try for these books and they’re not easy to win, the potential for free books is always a beautiful thing!
5. You can keep track of all the books you want to read.
A books sounds interesting? Add it to your “Want to Read” shelf and you’ve got a made to order wishlist when you’re looking for a new book to read!
6. You can write your own reviews of everything you read.
Share your thoughts with your friends, the author, and anyone who’s thinking about reading the book you just finished!
7. You can recommend books to friends.
See #2. It works both ways!
8. You can see what your friends are reading and check out their reviews.
Maybe your friend didn’t send a recommendation, but they left a rating and/or review. If you have similar tastes, maybe you just found your next read!
Under the “Community” tab there is a Trivia option and a Quizzes option. Spend your day answering literary questions. You’ll have whiled away the afternoon before you know it!
10. You can make lists that other members can add to and comment on.
You can make a list of books related to anything you want. “Best Books I’ve Ever Read.” “My Favorite Childhood Books.” “Books I Want to See Made into Movies.” Anything is fair game!
